Another blow for UK biomass sector

Dedicated power-only biomass and co-firing plants will no longer be eligible for subsidies under the UK's contracts for difference (CfD) - a new support mechanism due to be implemented from next year and will succeed the existing Renewables Obligation (RO) from 2017. According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC): 'New build electricity-only biomass plants do not offer as cost-effective a means of decarbonising the electricity grid as other renewables technologies.'
