Summary: This paper reports the outcome of investigations into the molecular characterization of 373 endometrial carcinomas and groups the cancers into 4 categories with similar anomalies. Prior to this publication, endometrial carcinomas were broadly divided into 2 categories, type I and type II. Type I endometrial carcinoma carried a favorable prognosis and was associated with excess estrogen exposure and obesity and was more likely to be hormone receptor-positive. Type II was primarily serous; more common in older, nonobese women; and portended a poorer prognosis. In this report, 307 endometrioid carcinomas were investigated, including both low- and high-grade tumors. Sixty-six serous carcinomas and 13 mixed histology carcinomas were also characterized.
