Power grid blackouts - remembering and fighting grid failures

HOW TIME FLIES! IT WAS ONLY two years ago that we wrote the guest editorial column for the September/October 2004 issue of IEEE Power Energy Magazine. At that time, the final plans were being put in place for the inaugural IEEE PES Power Systems Conference and Exposition (PSCE), held in New York in October of that year. That first-time event exceeded all expectations in terms of the number of papers, exhibitors, and attendees, as those who were in New York will surely recall.
