Full Plate? A Model for Prioritizing and Managing Enterprise Projects

Background. The current economic climate requires health care leaders to make difficult decisions about resource allocation. As more pressure is placed on hospitals to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality, a way to prioritize and manage projects that require large investments in capital and labor is essential. Influenced by the desire to continually improve, our organization had a history of having too many priorities and not enough bandwidth. We have not been alone in health care, yet best practices and experience are limited for health care. Intervention detail. We drew from portfolio management practices to implement and evolve over time a model to set priorities, make trade-off decisions about resource allocation, and manage outcomes.
