ONGC stake purchases raise questions

India’s largest upstream firm, ONGC, has agreed to pay around $1.2bn for a stake in the troubled Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin owned by fellow state-run company GSPC. But the deal is raising questions about the government’s involvement. ONGC will buy GSPC’s 80pc operating interest in the Deen Dayal West natural gas field, offshore India’s east coast, for $995.3mn.
