As video conferencing communication becomes more widely accepted, there is a growing need for users to consider lighting in order to optimise the visual quality of the image transmitted. It is especially important when a company is dealing with clients using video conferencing, for example a central bank giving financial advice to clients in branches, that company representatives are portrayed it their best In this study, images of several subjects situated under a variety of luminaire arrangements and background-foreground combinations were collected and independently appraised to establish the preferred lighting conditions. In addition, human factors such as different skin colours, facial wrinkles, baldness and the wearing of spectacles were considered. This paper describes the arrangement and procedure, results and lighting analysis of the experiments and concludes with recommendations for ensuring good picture quality for video conferencing.
