Patrick King, Gerard Golin, and Steve Kolwicz Hoeganaes Corporation Clnnaminson, New Jersey and Ed Elsken, Gilbert Sehluterman and Suresh Shah Cloyes Gear & Products, Inc. Subiaco, Arkansas PM steels containing 0.8 w/o molybdenum are often used to form hybrid alloys such as Fe-0.8 w/o Mo-2.0 w/o Ni-0.6 w/o C. In the heat-treated condition, such alloys historically have provided a cost-effective method in the manufacture of high-performance components. The recent instability in molybdenum prices, however, has reduced their economic benefit and forced a search for alternative systems. This investigation provides a comparative analysis of 0.3 and 0.8 w/o molybdenum steels. An automotive crankshaft sprocket was evaluated as a prototype component in the as-sintered, induction-hardened, and quenched -and-tempered (Q&T) conditions.
