For nurses working in the area of palliative and end-of-life care the subject of genetics might seem very far removed from day-to-day practice. We know from media reports that some families have an inherited predisposition to develop certain conditions, e.g. breast cancer associated with alterations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. However, the implications of this do not always get translated into the responsibilities of the nurse to the patient in his/her care.
