Host-status and host-sensitivity of plant-parasitic nematodes to plants with potential resistance should be screened under diverse environmental conditions. A study was initiated to confirm the resistance of wild watermelon (Cucumis africanus) and wild cucumber (C. myriocarpus) to Meloidogyne incognita race 2 under microplot conditions. Eight treatments, viz. 0, 25, 50, 125, 250, 625, 1250 and 3125 nematode eggs and juveniles, were arranged in a randomised complete block design with five replicates. At harvest, results demonstrated that the reproductive factors of M. incognita race 2 on the two plant species at all inoculation levels were less than unity, without significant yield reduction due to nematode infection. In conclusion, resistance of C. africanus and C. myriocarpus to M. incognita race 2, previously obtained in greenhouse tests was also confirmed under microplot conditions, suggesting the potential sustainability of the observed resistance under diverse conditions.
