Waste Minimization: A Tool For Lean Implementation

Lean excellence is a coordinated response to today's highly competitive environment. Lean manufacturing philosophy asks for elimination of waste hidden in the manufacturing system by focusing on product value stream and eliminating non value adding activities. Lean manufacturing is a very successful strategy and can be applied to all type of organization i.e. manufacturing service etc. In this paper after giving a brief idea about lean philosophy, different types of wastes, causes of wastes, a case study of waste elimination by computation of Lean Manufacturing Index (LMI) has been discussed. Results obtained are quite encouraging.
