摘要

Coal has been used as a fuel since long. The coal is primary energy source and currently caters for about 41.3% of the world's total electricity generation and meets around 28.8% of the world's primary energy supply. The world's energy demand is continuously rising and it is expected that coal will continue to play a key role in meeting that energy demand in the future. Lignite is a types of coal and widely used for electricity generation in most of countries due to its common availability and cost effectiveness. However, the use of coal including lignite faces several challenges such as handling of ash, solids, pollutant emissions etc. and thus it is considered as dirty energy source. Thus, it is necessary to employ the technology for reducing the gaseous emissions from coal. The gasification technology with near-zero pollution emissions and high thermal efficiency, may be employed to convert a coal in to cleaner energy source. The gasification technology is now considered to be in an advanced stage of development. The aim of this paper is focused on a design of pilot-scale (10 kWe) downdraft gasifier for lignite fuel.
