WHIPPING UP A STORM: The winning plastics design set to revolutionise the '99'

The summer months in Blighty and beyond often mean one thing - hoards of people enjoying bright white, whippy-style ice cream characterised by soft peaks and a chocolate flake, regularly served from the back of a van playing a tinny version of 'Greensleeves'. Whilst enjoying the helical treat, few have probably wondered much about the production process behind creating the iconic summer specimen. That is, until now, where a design inspired by a review of the existing parts used in the dispensing machines, and how they could be improved by replacing traditional materials and processes, has won one student the top prize at the 2015 'Design Innovation in Plastics' (DIP) Awards.
