In this paper, we review the results of numerical studies on the gravitational radiation emitted in collapses of compact cores ending in a black hole. We compare the waveforms and the energy spectra obtained by using either perturbative or fully relativistic approaches, and discuss the preminent features that characterize thee signals and their detectability by current experiments on gravitational wave detection.
