According to a market report by Freedonia, worldwide demand for plastic pipe will reach 18.1 million tonnes, or 8.1 billion metres, in 2012. A more recent report, by Global Industry Analysts, forecasts production passing 6.5 billion metres in 2015. So what's a couple of billion metres of pipe between friends? The answer, of course, is that applications for plastics pipe are so diverse that totting yp the numbers can at best be a compromise of definitions. But whatever the bean counters decide, the reality is that pipes are big business. Consulting editor Ken Grace takes a quick look at some of the production issues that influence plastic pipes.
