Fuel economy and weight reduction of motor vehicles

Vehicle weight has tended to increase over the past several years due to a need to enhance safety performance and incorporate various new technologies. As the vehicle weight is a major factor in determining fuel economy, the importance of weight reducing technologies is growing. This paper describes the relationship between vehicle weight and fuel economy and the current status of weight reducing efforts.
