Development of EPDM Rubber Compound with White Filler for Constraint Layer Damping Technique

Damping materials can be used for a wide variety of vibration and noise reduction applications. To take full advantage of their vibration-reducing potential, product designers often must make a choice between using extensional (free layer) or constrained layer damping (CLD) systems. In constraint layer damping system, a thin layer of a visco-elastic material is applied over the vibrating substrate covered with a stiff constraining layer of a metal or a fiber reinforced plastic. Two different types of visco-elastic material based on Ethylene Propylene terpolymer (EPDM) with different types of fillers have been developed. These materials were chacterised for tensile properties, hardness, compression set, visco-elastic and ageing properties. Rubber sheets made with these two rubber compositions were fixed MS substrate with rigid epoxy adhesives. Then 1mm thick of same MS plate was fixed on visco elastic layer by same rigid epoxy adhesives as a constraing layer. Vibration damping studies have been carried out by using FFT analyzer with and without constraint layer damping system. Vibration attenuation achieved was 1-9 dB at 1.5 KHz to 7 KHz for both the materials.
