Prevalence of metabolic syndrome is still underestimated in the Chinese population.

Although the prevalence of metabolic syndrome has been shown to be steadily rising in the Western world , similar trend in China has not been well documented. A recent report from Beijing, China showed a similarly high prevalence in a large professional population (15.1% in men and 10.2% in women). But the prevalence in that report was underestimated, because it was based on criteria proposed by the National Cholesterol Education Programs Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII) and the World Health Organization (WHO), both of which have high cutoff points if applied to the Chinese population .
