Recently, platelet dense-granule secretion has been reported to play a critical role in not only thrombosis but also subsequent atherosclerotic vascular remodeling after vascular injury in atherosclerotic mice [1]. Serotonin is one of the most important constituents of platelet dense granule. Very recently, plasma 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA), a derivative end product of serotonin, has been reported to be positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose and negatively correlated with high-density lipopro-tein cholesterol in subjects with the metabolic syndrome [2]. Further, plasma 5-HIAA levels were higher in subjects with the metabolic syndrome than in subjects without the metabolic syndrome, suggesting the potential importance of serotonin in the development of cardiovascular disease in the metabolic syndrome [2].
