Whirlpool contractor knocked off MEWP

White goods manufacturer Whirlpool UK Appliances appeared in the dock last month over the death of a self-employed fire alarm contractor. He fell nearly five metres after his MEWP was knocked over when a conveyor was turned on. Whirlpoolwas fined ?700,000, after the sentencing judge treated it as a "very large" company, far exceeding the ?140,000 fine suggested for a large firm in the same culpability and harm category.
