Trainer Sense of humour: well placed in the consultation or inappropriate?

A sense of humour is often something enjoyed between colleagues in the work place. Some may even emphasize this characteristic on their curriculum vitae, and it is often a skill looked for on dating sites. But should it belong in the consultation? I recall an occasion when I was in my surgery waiting room and asked a patient if she was alright. She leant forward and said quietly 'half left!' A chuckle between doctor and patient is, in my opinion, a good sign; it reflects a positive relationship and patient satisfaction. From my perspective, if humour flourishes in the consultation, it helps me to relax, reduces stress and takes my single-minded clinical brain into a less tense dimension. I also feel that it enhances my rapport with the patient and is a reflection of a relaxed atmosphere.
