Vaginal danazol for the treatment of endometriosis-related pelvic pain.

Dysmenorrhea, deep dyspareunia, and chronic pelvic pain are major symptoms of endometriosis. Treatment of endometriosis with pharmacologic agents or surgery often leads to only temporary relief, with the condition having a high rate of recurrence.Previous studies have shown encouraging results with danazol used vaginally for pain relief in endometriosis [1,2]. Danazol inhibits aromatase activity in endometriosis-derived stromal cells but does not affect the mRNA or protein levels of the enzyme—hence, the efficacy of local application to endometriotic lesions [3].The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of vaginal danazol among women with recurrent pelvic pain (dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and chronic pelvic pain) following previous treatment of severe endometriosis.
