Vaginal misoprostol for salvage therapy after failed medical abortion.

From October 2001 to March 2006, 375 pregnant women received a medical abortion at Kuo General Hospital in Tainan, Taiwan. After medical history was taken, all women underwent a vaginal ultrasonographic examination to determine whether their pregnancy duration was Less than 7 weeks. To induce abortion the women received 600 mg of mifepristone oraliy (Roussell-Uclaf, Romainville, France) and 400mug of misoprostol (Cytotec; Searle AG, Chicago, IL) 48 h later, also orally. If no expulsion had occurred within 4 hours of taking misoprostol, another 200mug of misoprostol was administered orally.
