The cost of keeping workers healthy

As far as the law is concerned, employers must ensure that employees are provided with health surveillance, appropriate to the health risks, as identified by risk assessment. Health hazards to workers fall under the following headings: ■ biological or exposure to bacteria, viruses and parasites; ■ chemical exposures causing illnesses or conditions; ■ musculoskeletal, arising from inappropriate manual handling or repetitive movements; ■ physical or exposure to noise, vibration, extremetemperature, particulates, radiation, and atmospheric pressure (for example when working in compressed air); and ■ psychosocial or stress arising from behaviours or pressures.
