Construction giant Kier, fined 1.5m pounds after a worker was seriously injured when a partially shored trench collapsed, was "disengaged" from the project and failed to show up on site for over a week before works started, an HSE inspector has said. The main contractor on the storm drain project also relied on the "improvised" methods used by its subcontractor, and ignored a warning from its local council client that the site's ground conditions were poor and that specialist equipment would be needed.
