Advancing practice: From staff nurse to nurse consultant. Part 12: Series summary

In the last 11 issues of BJN, this column has explored a number of underpinning principles to help you advance your clinical practice. The first article asked the question, 'how ambitious are you?' My experience of nurses is that they are people-centred, caring and not particularly ambitious. For many nurses, the first step in developing their career or advancing practice is about increasing their confidence in their ability to achieve greater things. The development of confidence in your own abilities comes with practice and increasing competence. You might not be a naturally confident person, but if you learn how to do something well, your confidence will increase.
