Providing safe and good quality care for people with dementia in care homes

There have been a number of recent care home scandals widely reported in the media involving shocking and abusive care of residents. It is clear that there are many challenges in the care homes sector. A recent report by the Alzheimer s Society (2013) provides some excellent insights and recommendations that will help improve care quality and safeguard patients' rights in care homes.There are 432 000 older people and physically disabled people in around 20 000 homes in the UK and it is estimated that two thirds of residents in care homes have a form of dementia. Recent studies have indicated that at least 80% of people in care homes have dementia or significant memory problems. There are 487 000 care home places in the UK and the care home market in the UK is worth some 15.2 billion a year in total.
