New standards for hospital food

On 15 October 2012, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced the publication of new standards for hospital food, accompanied by a set of basic principles covering the quality of food, nutritional content and choice for patients. These aspirations will be augmented by patient-led food inspections. This publication of nutrition standards follows in the wake of a critical Care Quality Commission (CQC) report published in 2011 that inspected dignity and nutrition in 100 NHS trusts. These new standards are supported by Age UK, Patients Association, Hospital Caterers Association, Royal College of Nursing, Soil Association, British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and the British Dietetic Association.
