Understanding the practice environment

In March 2015, King's College published its report to NHS England on the development and validation of the Culture of Care Barometer (Rafferty et al, 2015). Overall, it reports that the tool was simple and easy to use, as well as quick to complete. It was also seen as a useful adjunct to the friends and family test, and sensitive to different cultures and behaviours within teams-what they termed 'subcultures'.The key messages in the report are that the barometer was developed from concerns about the culture of care in practice; that the tool was developed and tested in a variety of settings; and that it was seen as adding value to existing tools to stimulate conversations, particularly within teams.
