Levels of investigation of major injuries, over-three-day injuries, dangerous occurrences and of injuries to members of the public have all declined significantly since 2001-02, says a study for the Unite trade union.The report records six years of continuous decline from 2001-02, which was itself a 12-month period of comparatively low-level investigations. It argues that the current lack of investigation undermines the system of health and safety enforcement in the UK, and risks it falling into disrepute. 'Increasingly, employers are able to cause serious injury or place workers and members of the public at significant risk, through dangerous occurrences, without there being any intervention by a state body', says the report.
