Applying the lessons of the francis inquiries: Culture change

The tragic and inexcusable events that took place at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and led to the unnecessary suffering and harm of patients changed forever the face of the NHS. Hospitals should not cause harm to people but the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust caused patient harm and suffering on a shocking and unprecedented scale. Patients' interests fell between the cracks, sacrificed to a financial target-driven culture where quality of care and patients' interests were only of secondary importance.
