Since the introduction of the first disposable pouch in the late 1950s, the features and appearance of a typical stoma pouch have continued to improve. This is owing to the ongoing research and development that has occurred as a result of listening to the opinions and taking into account the needs of patients and nurses. As a stoma nurse, I am always interested in reviewing the latest products and hearing how new features may benefit the patients that I care for; however, my own assessment of these features does lean towards the clinical benefits for my patients and how a product might overcome a clinical problem, such as the introduction of convexity, which was designed to increase the protrusion of flush or retracted stomas and enhance efficient emptying into a pouch.
