Medicine management and infection prevention.

One area scrutinized by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on their current round of inspections has been medicine management. This has led to an evaluation by trusts of their policies related to medicine management, along with rationale for checking processes used for intravenous therapy. When the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008) published its initial Standards for Medicines Management, Standard 20 caused controversy as it stated that 'wherever possible, two registrants should check medication to be administered intravenously'. However, it is not clear exactly what should be checked - the preparation, the administration or both.
