Non-Destructive Evaluation of Dimensional Properties and Physical Characterization of Carrisa Carandas Fruits

Basic physical properties of biomaterial Carrisa carandas (Karonda) fruits were evaluated which are often required in order to design the handling, grading and processing equipment. The fresh karonda fruits were evaluated for their dimensional, gravimetric and frictional properties. The average longitudinal, transverse and thickness dimensions of fruits were 21.81 ±1.22, 16.96±0.90 and 16.67±0.82 mm, respectively. The geometric mean diameter, unit mass, aspect ratio, porosity, surface area, sphericity and true density were 18.34±0.91 mm, 4.03±0.32g, 77.85±0.3%, 44.96±1.49% 222.07±21.96 mm~2, 84.12±1.72% and 0.997±0.02 g/ml, respectively. However, static coefficient of friction varied on three different surfaces were 0.14±0.002 on galvanized steel sheet, 0.20±0.003 on plywood and 0.16±0.002 on glass, while the angle of repose was 37.11°. The dimensional parameters were also evaluated through image analysis. Evaluation of comparative performance confirmed that image analysis could be used as a precise non-contact and non-destructive tool for evaluation of dimensional properties of biomaterials for the automation of the processes.
