Policy is an integral component of nursing. Practitioners need to be aware not only of the content of new policy, but the wider context and political aspects in order to recognize how policy impacts on professional practice. In the first of this new BJN column, Alan Glasper, Professor of Nursing at the University of Southampton, examines the implications of a new report on carers in the NHS.
