Anticancer activity of sesquiterpene lactone from plant food (Carpesium rosulatum) in human cancer cell lines.

In the search for anticancer compounds against human cancer cells (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, XF498 and HCT15), it was found that chloroform extracts obtained from the whole plant food Carpesium rosulatum exhibited significant anticancer activity. The structures and stereochemistry of these compounds were determined on the basis of spectra analysis, m.p., [ alpha]_D25, infrared, UV, electron ionization MS, MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and some chemical transformations (4 beta,10 alpha-dihydroxy-guaia-8 alpha,12-olide, 4 beta,10 alpha-dihydroxy-1(2),11(13)-guaiadien-8 alpha,12-olide and 3 beta,8 beta-dihydroxy-1 alpha,5 alpha-guaian-10(14)-ene-6 alpha,12-olide). Anticancer activity of compounds obtained from C. rosulatum against 5 human tumour cell lines was evaluated by sulforhodamine B methods. 4 beta,10 alpha-dihydroxy-1(2),11(13)-guaiadien-8 alpha,12-olide was found to be significantly effective against the 5 human tumour cell lines.
