Content of trace metals (iron, zinc, manganese, chromium, copper, nickel) in canned variegated scallops (Chlamys varia).

Concn. of trace metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Cu and Ni) in canned foods prepared from variegated scallops (Chlamys varia) were determined. A total of 300 samples from 7 commercial brands (named A, B, D, H, J, L and M) and 1 processing type, 'scallop sauce', were analysed. Samples were collected weekly in a large shopping centre in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during a 12-month period. Variegated scallops were found to contain considerable concn. of Zn, Cu and Mn, so that their dietary intake constitutes an important source of these metals. However, they contained low concn. of Cr and Ni, and their levels of Fe were similar to those found in other bivalve molluscs.
