One of the important areas within the research programme of the Bremen Institute IndustrialTechnology and Applied Work Science (BIBA) is oriented towards the study of productiontechnology. A particular domain is devoted to the manufacturing of one-of-a-kind products for themaritime industry. The paper describes a case study of a successful application of structured methodsfor modelling the ship predesign process. An essential provision of this study was an investigation ofpredesign practices performed by various shipyards. The BRITE-EURAM Project BE 4227.90'ArgoShip' focused on the overall improvement of the ship predesign process. Quality managementhas been identified as an essential measure for ensuring the fulfilment of customer requirements. Thepaper describes concepts showing how quality management can be implemented within thepredesign process. For this process, a reference model as an integrated approach to the shippredesign has been specified. The model is based on a combination of selected structured techniques.
