摘要

The Mediterranean is an original and unique eco-region. It has particular geographical and historical characteristics, its natural and cultural heritage and the feeling shared by the wide array of populations that belong to the 'Mediterranean world'. In these particularities are rooted a number of initiatives that address the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The 2008 initiative of the French President Sarkozy to structure a number of these actions under one political heading is the most recent in the series.Sustainable development, integrating environmental, social and economic concerns of the region, is one of the most important efforts. In this context, the 'Blue Plan' in 1989 already highlighted the risks of a growing divide between the north and the south of the Mediterranean Basin and of continuing and sometimes irreversible environmental degradation.
