The International Journal of Digital Earth (IJDE) owes its recent spectacular growth to an increasing development in the field of Digital Earth science and technology. This can be witnessed by its new impact factor of 1.453 for the year 2010 and its new rank rising to seventh in the list of 23 international journals in the remote sensing category of Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Report. From these statistics, it is not hard to see that more and more attention has been paid to the important role that Digital Earth science and technology have played when facing scientific and societal challenges.
