Does UK nursing research have an impact on care delivery?

Every 4-5 years, the government implements a process of research assessment to appraise the scope and quality of the research being carried out within UK institutes of higher education. In December 2014, the results of the Research Exccellence Framework (REF) within nursing, midwifery and the allied health professions were published. For the first time this assessment included specific measures of the impact of research. Glasper and Fader (2013) have discussed how information on nursing research was collected by universities from 2008 up until the census date in the autumn of 2013. For the purposes of the assessment, individual nurse academics were asked to submit their best four publications resulting from their research over that time period. The submitted papers were subsequently judged and graded, by an assessment panel that considered the research outputs from allied health professions, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy.
