Political Pressure's Effect on Repository Sites

R. C. Ewing and F. N. von Hippel's Proposal for the construc-tion of multiple repositories for spent nuclear fuel ("Nuclear waste management in the United States-starting over," Policy Forum, 10 July, p. 151) ignores history and current events. The 1982 Nuclear Waste Policy Act mandated that a search for a second repository be undertaken in the eastern half of the United States to complement the ongoing search in several western states, a search that led to Yucca Mountain, Nevada (1).
