In an ideal world, everyone would like to make a difference in their professional life, but sometimes working in the NHS can leave you feeling like an anonymous cog in an extremely large and cumbersome machine. The day-today mechanics of such a huge organization can make it hard to feel that you are having a real impact - the turnover of patients and staff, the pressure on beds, and the drive to economize and hit targets all mean that simply doing the job of nursing has grown more difficult as the health service becomes increasingly complex.
