摘要

Each person with MS is unique and unpredictable. These qualities also make the specialist MS nurse unique in his/her role. Sometimes the role is about protecting the health of an acutely ill patient; sometimes it is about coaching a well person with MS to be independent, confident and expert in the management of their condition. Other times the role concerns advocacy for the vulnerable and at risk, addressing mental health, palliative care, or end-of-life issues. In the past, those who were committed to nursing regarded the act of caring and the responses of patients, as the indication of worth. The modern NHS now requires services to provide evidence of effectiveness across a range of benchmarks and indicators: act smarter, pay for success and no longer reward failure (Lankshear, 2005).
