摘要

When packet errors occur in network transmission of H.264/AVC coded bit-streams, an error concealment (EC) technique can be used to conceal the error effect in a decoded macroblock (MB) for better viewing quality. The built-in EC method adopted by H.264 is basically a pixel-mean interpolation approach. The approach often performs poorly when a lost MB contains significant edges. This paper proposes an improved version to this approach by estimating and exploiting the edge information in a lost MB for better recovery of edge pixels. The lost MB is either concealed by the proposed method or pixel-mean interpolation depending on a proposed criterion. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the original H.264 approach and its variation called SDI (sequential directional interpolation) method both visually and in PSNR with comparable computational time.
