Loop ileostomy or loop colostomy: Which one is better for fecal diversion?

I read the article by Klink CD et al. (Int J Colorectal Dis 2011; 26:431^36) with great interest and would like to offer some comments based on my own personal experience. In order to reduce leakage-related complications after sphincter-saving surgery for the treatment of lower rectal cancer, surgeons often perform a derivative stoma, a loop ileostomy or a loop colostomy. But to date, there is no evidence on which is the better technique to adopt. Therefore, the surgeon often faces the decision on whether to perform loop ileostomy or loop colostomy.
