Comparative performance of different breeds of sheep for wool yield.

The wool yield (average greasy fleece yield, AGFY) of 10 Marwari, 10 Nali and 6 Chokla ewes, shorn in March and October, was recorded from 1990 to 1992. Sheep were grazed on rangeland in semi-arid Rajasthan, with free access to water but no feed supplementation. There were significant differences between AGFY for the breeds (Nali, 1.267; Chokla, 1.130 and Marwari, 0.130 kg). Chokla and Nali, which are indigenous breeds of arid Northern Rajasthan, gave much lower yields than previous results predicted; this was attributed to the lack of dietary supplements and lower body weight of the ewes. The Marwari is indigenous to the area and yields were as expected. It is concluded that wool yield from this part of Rajasthan would be improved by the introduction of Chokla and Nali sheep.
