Effect of antibiotic treatment on bacterial load and preservability of chilled bovine semen.

Semen was collected from 24 bulls and diluted and stored at 3deg-7degC for 0, 24 and 48 h after the addition of streptomycin + benzyl penicillin, streptomycin + benzyl penicillin + gentamicin, and streptomycin + benzyl penicillin + ampicillin. The effect of different combinations of antibiotics on semen characteristics was not significant but the effect on total bacterial count (TBC) was highly significant. The period of storage influenced (P<0.01) sperm motility, eosinophil count, sperm abnormalities,acrosomal integrity and TBC. The most effective combination was streptomycin + benzyl penicillin + gentamicin followed by streptomycin + benzyl penicillin + ampicillin for reducing the bacterial load in chilled semen without affecting semen quality.
