Osteoclasts in osteopetrotic (op/op) mice are substantially reduced by the absence of functional macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF). It has been reported that recombinant human M-CSF (M-CSF) injection is effective for the recovery of osteoclastic activity in op/op mice (5). In this study, different effects of rhM-CSF were found between long bones and flat bones in terms of the appearance of osteoclasts. After a single injection of rhM-CSF, the number of osteoclasts of the long bones was larger in old op/op mice than in the younger group, but in the calvariae we could not recognize any differences with aging. Based on these findings, it is shown that the osteoclast appearance after rhM-CSF injection may be influenced by the different timing of ossification in various bones. [References: 12]
