Economic slaughter weight of Hampshire barrows.

An investigation was carried out with 4 groups of Hampshire barrows (5 animals per group) that were slaughtered at 70, 80, 90 or 100 kg body weight (?.0 kg) respectively to determine the optimum slaughter weight. The overall cost of feeding per kgbody weight gain were estimated to be Rs. 24.19, 25.65, 26.25 and 26.75 and the feed cost per kg edible carcass were Rs. 29.80, 31.02, 32.22 and 33.60 for the 70, 80, 90 and 100 kg groups respectively. The average net income per Rs. 100 invested was Rs.133.66, 130.68, 128.36 and 125.98 for the 70, 80, 90 and 100 kg slaughter weight groups respectively. It is concluded that the optimum slaughter weight of Hampshire barrows in Assam (India) is 70 kg.
