Guar meal (C. tetragonoloba) was fermented with Aspergillus niger by solid substrate fermentation. The toasted, autoclaved and fermented meals were used to replace (on a w/w basis) the groundnut meal in broiler starter rations. Growth rate, feed conversion ratio and protein retention were better (P<0.05) in chickens fed on the fermented meal than those fed on the toasted and autoclaved meals. The toasted and autoclaved meal significantly lowered the digestibility of DM, organic matter, soluble carbohydrates and fats, and protein retention and increased the activity of lipase, amylase and proteases in the duodenal contents. It is concluded that fermentation of guar meal with non-toxic fungi makes it a useful protein supplement for broilers.
